Poodle
One of the most popular of dogs, the Poodle is the only breed that comes in three sizes; toy 10” and under at the shoulder, miniature over 10” but not over 15” at the shoulder and standard over 15” at the shoulder.
Origin
Originating from Germany, the Poodle was originally used as a water dog. The oddly clipped coat was developed by hunters to make the Poodle more agile in the water and the tufts of hair were to protect vital organs and keep them warm. The standard size is the largest size of Poodle and is also the oldest.
Temperament
Poodles are exceptionally smart and do well in an apartment or a house setting. A Poodle thinks he is a ‘person’ and expects you to treat him as one. They are a loving breed of dog and want to be with you. They want to be a member of your family and bond very quickly with their human companions. Poodles are easily trained. But like all dogs, you need to keep the training up so they don’t think they are the boss.
Grooming
Poodles have a hypo-allergenic coat so they are a great dog to have if there are family members with allergies. Poodle hair being so curly they need daily grooming to prevent matting. You can cut their hair yourself as it is an easy cut, or take them to a professional groomer. Poodles do not shed which is another reason why they are popular with people who have allergies.
Exercise
Poodles are an active breed and do not like to be bored. They are great in agility and also excel in tracking and rescue work. They are a breed which needs exercise on a daily basis. Poodles strive to do their best in anything you teach them. They are pleased when they learn something new and love showing you how proud they are. They love to solve problems. Hide their favorite toy and have them retrieve it or give them a Kong filled with treats. They love to go on a walk which is great exercise for both dog and owner.
Poodles generally do not do well in a chaotic house. They will develop nipping and biting habits that will be hard to break. You do not want a nippy dog. They like consistency and a daily routine. Poodles do not like to be by them selves but they do well if left alone while you are at work; they want to be with their family and will always stand by their owners. Poodles do great in homes with elderly people as well since they are such loving, caring dogs.
Poodles come in an array of colors; black, brown, grey, apricot, red, white and silver. Their hair is either curly or corded (small clumps of curls). With many choices of sizes and colors to choose from all sizes have the same sweet, proud temperament. Poodles are useful in so many different ways; hunting, herding, agility, search and rescue and as therapy dogs. Whether for a new home or elderly person, a poodle may be right for you.
